After taking my 5 month old baby to Mexico, I thought I could share a few things I learned along the way.

First of all, I had a lot of parents surprised that I was even thinking about taking her along to a (heaven forbid) foreign country!  "You're taking your baby!??!"  I got a LOT Of that.. I think it's crazy.  They have babies in Mexico too, peeps!

Here is a good article that talks a little bit more about that.  We will grow up taking our families to Mexico (and ideally many other countries).  You just have to know what you're doing!

Flying with a 5 month old Baby:
  • If at all possible, schedule the flight around the time that the baby would nap, or even a Red eye.  This is not always easy to do, but if at all possible, keep them awake during the time at the airport, so he/she is nice and sleepy for the flight.

  • To prevent the babies ears from popping, nurse, bottle feed, or use a pacifier to encourage sucking during take off and landing.. Although, on our way home, she fell asleep before the plane departed, and wouldn't nurse through the take off, and she was fine!  So, who knows.. Sometimes their bodies just work itself out, but it's better safe than sorry!

  • Check your stroller at the gate and it will be ready for you when you get off.  Also, for Mexico, we opted out of bringing a carseat.. It just wasn't necessary.  We held her in taxi's the few times we took one for short rides, and it was fine.  It was so nice not lugging that around our whole trip!

  • Download some Baby Einstein!  I don't typically turn the t.v. on for Everly, but in this case, I wanted to be prepared for her to start getting fussy and anxious.  I just downloaded a 30 minute video and turned it on once, and she calmed right down.  It was worth it to prevent a meltdown!

  • There are diaper changing stations in the bathrooms on the plane.. I didn't know that and I changed her in our seats!  (I didn't know where one would fit! haha) But the flight attendant did prefer that I use that instead.  Plus, it's nice to get up and walk a little.

Mexico with a 5 month old Baby

Taking Everly to Mexico was awesome, but there are a few things I learned along the way..

  • Don't overpack!  We only brought enough diapers to get us through the first day and then we bought a pack down there. Most areas of Mexico have everything you could need.  However, I did not see organic formula or baby food, so you would want to bring that (as I did).

  • SUN PROTECTION!  Sunscreen all day long, long sleeve SPF clothing, and sun hats!  You just can't get enough sun protection!  Also, make sure that your stroller has a shade.. That is key!  I seriously did everything in my power to protect her from the sun, and even still she got a little bit pink.. It's hard to avoid down there.  That sun is so strong!

  • Watch for overheating!  There were times when having the pool was a neccessity!  She loved playing in the pool, and it did wonders in cooling her off.  But again, make sure she's lubed up in SPF and has a sun hat on!

  • Lesson Learned: a Front Pack/Carrier/Sling is NOT for a Mexican vacation!  It just gets too hot.  We brought it, and tried it for one day, and it just didn't work out.

  • Be prepared to spend a lot of time in your hotel room.  If you're a new parent like myself, it's quite a change from how Chase and I used to travel.  Everly fits into "our" lifestyle pretty well, but there is a lot of things we've had to adjust, and when traveling and spending a nap time in the hotel room during the day is a part of it.
HAVE FUN!  Growing up traveling, they will try new foods, meet new people, learn different languages, and overall grow to be inspired individuals! Raising your children to see other parts of the world and being able to share these experiences and adventures with them is what it's all about!

Stay Tuned:  Our next trip is planned for August to go to Seattle and Orcas Island for a week.  Everly will be 10 months old then, so I'm sure we will have an addendum to this with new tips and ideas!

It's been almost a YEAR since I've blogged, and recently, I've had the itch again!!!

I just love to share my ideas, projects, and basically just LIFE!

I've just been busy, I guess, and felt a little uninspired..  I was tired towards the end of my pregnancy!  My days just would consist of working and going for a daily walk, but I seemed to lack motivation and creativity to do any posting.. And after I had my little lady, it pretty much went the same!

So let's do a little recap of what I've been up to!

Last time I was on, I was pregnant.. and I got realllllly pregnant!

And I loved it.  I seriously never felt better!  So I did everything pregnant, all summer long!  I attended my ten year reunion, sober cabbed until bar close for the fourth of July, and even went to one of my good girlfriend's Bachelorette parties on the Lake.

5 days after my due date, Sunday, September 28th, I refused to have to go to work on Monday..  I told Chase, we're getting this baby out of me this weekend!!! So, we did ALL we could.. walked, made "special" cookies, walked more, did other "stuff" in between, and at one point, I even hooked up my breast pump!  Haha!!!  So i'm not sure if one of those things worked, or it was just her time, but finally I started getting some contractions and went into the hospital Sunday night.
After they had me walk for a little while as I was in excruciating pain, they told me I was in back labor, and that the baby was face up.  It was PAINFUL!  BUT--- after I finally got my epidural, everything was smooth sailing!!!
My little peanut made her debut Monday morning, and she was perfect.. Let me tell you, the most amazing feeling in the whole entire world is after you've given your ALL, and are exhausted you can't do anything else, and they put your naked, crying baby on your bare chest, and you kiss your significant other, and both just start crying.  I've never felt so overwhelmed with love in my whole life!  It's incredible!

Everything has been going so well with her.. She sleeps well, eats well, and is overall such a good baby.  We've had lots of visitors, and have already done so many fun things with her!

Three Months Old!

When she was five months old, we went to Mexico with her!  Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen.  In Cozumel we had a friends wedding at a gorgeous dive resort.  Afterwards, we switched up the scene to Playa Del Carmen for a different feel.  I'll have more on that coming soon.. But it was a blast!
Peanut!!!

She loves her puppy, she's a beautiful, loving, smart, smiling little girl.
I've actually had numerous people tell me she feels like an "Old Soul" which I think is very interesting!  She has something about her though.. like she knows something you don't.  She's secretly smarter than all of us, she just can't talk yet.

6 MONTHS!!!

Anyways.. I just wanted to catch my blog up a bit..  I've just been a little bit busy the past 9 months!!! I do have so many ideas and things I want to share in the near future, so stay tuned!

It's been a while since I've been on here!  I honestly just haven't had too much going on.   I've been staying busy enough, with walks with girlfriends, dinners, and sleeping.  Haha!

One thing I've been working on is this old dresser from my mom's house that I wanted to redo for Baby's dresser/changing table.

It's old, and the drawers were raggedy and needed some fixing up.  Chase put them back together pretty well with his staple gun.

While he was doing this, he saw that someone had marked up the dresser in the back of a drawer with "Clara (can't make out the last name) Aug. 13 17"
How cool!  We also found some old newspaper that was embedded in the bottom of the drawer that was written in German, so we think Clara was German.

If that dresser could talk....

Anyways.. I thought that I wanted to do a whitewash on it.  Something transparent, that'd brighten it up some, but still keep it kind of rustic and let the wood show throw.  Well, I tried it and it just looked unfinished.  It looked like a bad paint job.  So, I mixed up some chalk paint (like I did for the end table, here) and went with simple white.  It took a few coats for it to look the way I wanted it to, but it turned out pretty good.

Of course, I painted around Clara's inscription.

Afterwards, I sprayed it down with a water based Poly.  It didn't go on quite as thick as I had hoped, but it sealed it pretty well.  It looks adorable in the room!  I think Clara would be proud!

My first shower is this weekend, and i'm so excited!  I'm in such a nesting mode, I can't wait to finish getting the room all put together!

Have I mentioned how I'm incredibly indecisive?  I love being creative, but then when I have too many options I get overwhelmed and never know what to do!  It happened with wedding planning (in pretty much every aspect), choosing a field to work in (which is consistent for me, lol), and now decorating my house, which has inevitably rolled over into the baby room.

Originally, before we knew the gender (and pretty much thought we'd have a boy) I wanted to do a fun, worldly theme.  Then, everywhere you look there's such adorable animal stuff everywhere.. Elephants, owls, monkeys, and so on.. how do you decide?  So, we painted the room gray, because we knew we wanted it gender neutral, either way.  And then, once we found out it was a girl..  I obviously wanted to do something a little more girly.  I can't help it!  I'm a girly girl!  I can't fight it.  However, I don't want to clutter the room with "Princess" stuff.  >>We've talked before about how we don't want her to get a "princess" mentality, and don't want to focus on that, just because she's the only girl of the family<<

I figure, the room is gray with white trim, and we're going to get a white crib.  The rest of the stuff I feel like just fills up..  Am I right?  People give you sentimental things, the kids eventually make things, I will obviously add some of my own things, but I feel like the bedrooms turn into something on their own.

This is turning out to be a way longer explanation of this room, but bear with me!  Haha!

Anyways.. everything else is going to be gray and white, with some pink thrown in because I feel like it's inevitable.  So, I dug out Chase's old end table, and decided to make that a fun little piece!

I always forget to take a before picture until I've already started.. sorry!

I made my own chalk paint, because it's crazy expensive!

Basically, every recipe you find on Pinterest is different, but they all seem to work.

So, I bought some Plaster of Paris.

Recipe:

2 Cups of Flat Paint

2 Heaping tablespoons of Plaster of Paris

2 Tablespoons of water

Stir it together, and it'll give the paint a nice chalky texture once it dries.

I also spray painted the old gold hardware white.

Once it all dried, I debated sanding the edges or not, and opted not to.  I decided I just wanted it clean.  So I used some liquid wax to wipe all over it to finish it up, and it turned out great!

It's just a fun, girly, pop of color.

 Happy Monday!

I had such a nice weekend.. I got my hair done, went out and spent some time with some friends, slept, got some things done around the house.. a little bit of everything!

Yesterday, once I finally rolled out of bed I made myself run some errands just to get moving..

Then I went home and juiced (cucumber, kale, lemon, apple, grapes, and carrots).  I've just been LOVING playing with all of the different combinations...  it all ends up being so tasty!   After that, cleaned the whole house and even did some rearranging..  and then (naturally) after cleaning the whole house, I decided to bake.  Why does that happen like that?  Am I the only person who cleans the kitchen just to wreck it?  Haha.. Oh well, it was fun, and I was craving something freshly baked...
So I started thinking of what I have in my cupboards, and googling some recipes, and of course, ended up coming up with my own mini muffin recipe.. and might I say, they are DELICIOUS!

Ingredients:
2 tbsp honey (mine has added pollen)
1/4 100% Pure Maple Syrup
1 large egg
1 tsp (all natural) vanilla extract
3 large bananas, mashed
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/2 tsp of baking soda
1/2 tsp sea salt
3/4 c. Coconut oil
1/2 Cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 tsp of crushed flax seeds

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2.  Beat honey, egg, bananas, vanilla, and maple syrup until blended.  Add in flours, baking soda, salt, flax seeds and coconut oil.  Beat until combined, and then add in the chocolate chips.
3.  Grease your muffin pan!  I used a mini-muffin pan, so I baked mine for about 13-15 minutes..  (until edges are golden brown).   If you use a normal muffin pan, bake them for a little longer, like 16-18 minutes.

I was so nervous these weren't going to turn out, but they ended up perfect, and even the next day.. They're so moist (I know, everyone hates that word.. but they are!) and delicious!

Try them yourself, and
if you find any other alternatives or substitutes, let me know!
